What is Single-Source Component Authoring?

Single source authoring is a modern modular method of content production, with multiple publications, online and in-app help all built from the same authoritative "write once" components (which includes commonly repeated text snippets, larger topics and images, etc.). Instead of having to find and replace outdated content across multiple documents and systems, these common components are much more efficiently maintained in a single location. Fonts, branding colours and logos, page layouts and cover pages, etc., are also all separated from the focussed day-to-day task of maintaining accurate and up-to-the-minute content.

These techniques enable content to be highly efficiently managed and repurposed on demand. For example, content can be easily published to different file types or in online help, to different target devices, automatically include expanded content, or re-branded (even with different product naming) depending on the target audience being customers, trainers, partners, or product resellers.

Content duplication and maintenance across multiple documents or systems is eliminated. End-user and trainer guides, executive white papers, technical documents, policy documentation, eBooks, responsive online help, as well as partner content etc., are all derived from a single, current, authoritative version of the truth.

Content changes (including translation to multiple languages) can also be engineered using some of the same version control techniques and tools familiar to best-practice software developers, while still able to be maintained efficiently by anyone familiar with modern word processing software.
